Chiropractic emphasises on the body’s ability to heal itself, without surgery or medication.
Treatment typically involves manual therapy, often including spinal manipulation. Other forms of treatment, such as exercise and nutritional counseling, may be used as well.
Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury, which is typically caused by situations like sitting without proper back support, or repetitive stress on different parts of the body.
In other words, it’s the therapeutic ‘crack’ and ‘pop’ we commonly hear in videos.
Chiropractic treatment is mainly used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones and connective tissue, and is sometimes used in conjunction with other conventional medical treatments.
According to WebMD…
Chiropractors use their hands to diagnose and treat people, doing adjustments to correct alignment, restore health recommending exercises, and giving lifestyle advice. They focus on musculoskeletal problems, such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches.
Or as most Singaporeans know as “Cracking necks”
These crack noises come from small packets of air or bubbles inside our joints called synovial fluid which helps said joints glide smoothly. When you apply force to them, pressure can build up and turn into gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. These gases shift and emit a cracking noise as they dissipate.
The manual treatment methods used by chiropractors range from stretching and sustained pressure to specific joint manipulations, which are usually delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust.
The purpose of the manipulations is to improve joint motion and function. Manipulations are most commonly done on the spine, but other parts of the body may also be treated in this way.
Chiropractors go through a rigorous education of at least five years, and the syllabus is certified by an independent international body – the Council of Chiropractic Education. The World Health Organisation (WHO) also issues guidelines on the training and safety of chiropractic.
Yes, chiropractic adjustments are generally considered safe when it is performed by a trained doctor to deliver chiropractic care.
Although chiropractors do not have a medical doctor degree, most of them in Singapore have four or more years of overseas university or postgraduate studies with the degree titled, Doctor of Chiropractic. They are Doctors of Chiropractic Care – professionals who care about people and dedicated to providing non-invasive, personalized care and treatment.
Before you visit a chiropractor, do have a clear idea of your health history and bring along any accompanying medical documents, including recent x-ray scans if you have it. The more information you provide, the better the advice the chiropractors can give and the lower the risks.
For most patients, chiropractic adjustments are painless. Some patients who are new to chiropractic treatments may involuntarily stiffen or resist the adjustment and feel a small amount of discomfort until they are able to relax during treatment.
In fact, you might feel an immediate sense of relief as well as enhanced energy and mobility. That is just the magic of having your back popped!
A chiropractor can treat many conditions such as
Neck pain or stiffness
Back pain or stiffness
Headache / Migraine
Sports injuries
Hip pain or stiffness
Knee pain
Low energy / Fatigue
Office worker syndrome
Poor posture
Scoliosis
Shoulder dysfunction (Impingement, tight, frozen tears)
Sitting discomfort
Uneven shoulders / Hunchbacks
Wow, right?! Yup, a chiropractor can help to treat many conditions. The top 3 problems that people go to chiropractors are neck pain, back pain, and headaches/migraines. Usually, office workers, pregnant ladies and gamers are common demographics among patients.
With that said, not everyone is suitable for chiropractic treatment. If you suffer from the following, it is advisable to seek advice from specialists on the suitability of seeing a chiropractor.
Severe osteoporosis
Numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg
Cancer in your spine
A known bone abnormality in the upper neck
Herniated or slipped discs
Arthritis
There is growing evidence to suggest that chiropractic manipulation may be an effective treatment for:
Neck pain: According to a 2017 literature review, chiropractic workplace interventions may reduce self-reported mechanical neck pain among office workers.
Lower-back pain: A 2016 study found moderate evidence that chiropractic care may be as effective for lower-back pain as physical therapy. A 2017 systematic review found that spinal manipulative therapy was associated with modest improvements in pain and function for those with lower-back pain.
Chest pain: A 2016 study found chiropractic care to be more cost-effective than self-management for chest pain. It can be seen as a good primary care approach for those with non-specific chest pain.
As the profession has evolved, chiropractic has gained legitimacy as a complementary medical practice. In some countries, it is now considered to be part of mainstream medicine.
In Switzerland, chiropractic is now considered a primary medical profession. According to a 2016 article, the training programme chiropractors go through in Switzerland sets them up to become experts in primary spine care.
There is no evidence that chiropractic works as a treatment for health conditions that do not relate to the musculoskeletal system.
The average price of chiropractor ranges between $60 to $120 depending on the number of sessions purchased. If you are not sure a treatment would work for you, you can always try the trial session at a lower cost!
Chiropractors approach patient care in a manner similar to that used in conventional medicine.
At the initial visit, the chiropractor will ask questions about your health history as well as musculoskeletal pain.
Thereafter, the chiropractor will examine your spine. Spinal X-Rays are crucial for your chiropractor to confirm an accurate diagnosis. Should your case require X-Rays, your chiropractors will send you to a nearby facility for X-rays.
If treatment is needed, he or she will develop a treatment plan and monitor your progress.
Usually, you will lie down on a padded chiropractic table during the manipulation. They may adjust the table throughout to put you in determined positions to treat affected areas. Alternatively, they may ask you to sit on the table or stand next to it.
The chiropractor will use his or her hands (or a small tool) to move your joints. Expect them to treat your neck, shoulders, and back, as well as any other areas that need treatment.
He or she may also offer additional treatments such as:
Relaxation techniques – learn to relax muscles even during stressful times
Dietary management – how an improved diet can help back pain
Electrical stimulation – electrodes send light electrical pulses to stop muscle spasms, relieve back pain, and reduce inflammation
Heat and cold – a heating pad and an ice pack are applied alternately to promote faster healing
Massage – applied to soft tissues to reduce swelling and inflammation and improve circulation
Exercises – often focus on strengthening and stretching the back
